John Chwat — Washington, DC
A native Washingtonian dedicated to Congress and government relations, Mr. Chwat grew up with his eye on politics. After graduating from Long Island University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Mr. Chwat continued his education, earning a Master’s Degree in American Government from Georgetown University. Never one to rest on his laurels, Mr. Chwat went on to earn his Juris Doctor (JD) from American University’s Washington College of Law.
John Chwat began his career as a professional lobbyist in Washington, D.C. in 1971. Over the last 40 years, John Chwat has cultivated a strong and well-respected presence on Capitol Hill. He currently serves as President of the government relations firm of The Chwat Group, where it is his role to aggressively and successfully represent the interests of a large base of clients.
Since his start on Capitol Hill, Mr. Chwat has developed a breadth of experience representing a wide range of clients, including corporations, industry coalitions, foreign clients, and professional associations, at both the state and federal level. He has served important politicians on both sides of the aisle, making him one of the most experienced and well-rounded lobbyists in the industry.
Mr. Chwat has served as the Chief of Staff to the late Rep. John Breckinridge (D-KY), a Legislative Assistant to the late Rep. Seymour Halpern (R-NY), and a Staff member to the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee for the late Sen. Jacob Javits (R-NY). He’s served as Chairman of the House Antitrust Subcommittee and a member of the House Armed Services Committee to the former Rep. Bill Boner (D-TN) and served as a Member of the House Foreign Affairs and Banking Committees.
John Chwat has also held a Congressional research position in his role as a national defense and foreign policy analyst for the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress. There, he managed research and wrote congressional documents for the United States Congress. Mr. Chwat also worked for the Congressional Relations Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and served as a senior specialist in congressional relations for the Communications Satellite Corporation.
Thanks to his unique background and comprehensive understanding on Congressional inner workings, Mr. Chwat has become a popular speaker at trade association conventions, board of directors’ meetings, and state and national groups. He is widely respected for his teachings on lobbying techniques, the legislative process, and government-relations strategies. Mr. Chwat has lectured internationally and also taught at the collegiate level, including courses on lobbying, the U.S. government, and the legislative process at Trinity College, George Mason University, and Northern Virginia Community College.
John Chwat is currently a member of the Association of Government Relations Professionals, the American Association of Museums, the Capitol Hill Club, the United States Capitol Historical Society, the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He also serves as president of The American Friends of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Inc.
